SE Minneapolis, MN 55455 Email: georgios@ece.umn.edu Title: "Wireless Multi-Carrier Communications: where Shannon meets Fourier" ABSTRACT Taking a signals-and-systems viewpoint, this talk starts with a unifying framework for existing and novel wireless multi-carrier transceivers that hold great potential in various applications including broadcasting, modem design, multimedia services, mobile local area networks and future generation wideband communication systems. The resulting all-digital Generalized Multi-Carrier (GMC) CDMA designs rely on block symbol spreading and the Fast Fourier Transform to guarantee symbol recovery regardless of frequency- selective channel fades and without sacrificing bandwidth. GMC-CDMA eliminates multiuser interference by design and thereby converts a multiuser CDMA system into parallel single-user systems. It goes beyond direct-sequence and frequency-hopping alternatives when it comes to coping with multipath and suppressing narrowband or partial-band interference. The capability to offer multicarrier transmissions with virtually constant modulus and the flexibility to deliver multipath-transparent multirate services will also be stressed as they constitute important characteristics unique to GMC-CDMA.
